Disaster Recovery Planning for the Midmarket

The Conference Board released a report noting that while most large US firms they surveyed have an emergency preparedness plan, their adherence to standards such as ISO 17799 is voluntary. As we move towards certification of such standards, mapping to relevant controls increases in relevance, especially for small and medium sized businesses.

In several conversations this week I heard a similar theme: “We know we need governance, but it is a low priority. Especially when management sees that poor governance resulting in customer data loss is rarely met with severe punishment, they don’t see the need to invest.” They are missing the point, and an opportunity.

Continuing Security Breaches Raise Concerns

The malware-induced breach at Hannaford Brothers was caused by the installation of software on numerous servers, which sent credit card info to outsiders when customers used registers attached to the network. Who’s to blame? And, when will we see government intervention?
